Playing league at
LCC Tennis

Interested in taking part in the DLTC Leagues? Each league has a particular format - some are doubles only, some include singles matches and there is a mixed league during the summer months. LCC enters teams in each league throughout the year. Teams are graded in 'classes' in the league according to ability and each team will play 4 or 5 matches against other clubs in either home or away matches.

LCC women’s and men’s teams take part in all of the Dublin Lawn Tennis Council’s Leagues throughout the year. The competitions vary with singles, doubles and mixed double action. Leagues are a great way to compete with players from other clubs with each league comprising of home and away matches.

We encourage all LCC members to take part. Teams will be decided based on ability, availability and player combinations. We usually try to run coaching sessions ahead of both winter and summer league season to gauge interest, ability and see how people play individually and together.

Leagues run by DLTC

WINTER LEAGUE

Winter league starts in January each year. Each team is made up of 3 x doubles pairs, with the strongest pair playing at position 1 and so on. Subs may be used if needed.

Matches are usually played on Sundays.

SUMMER LEAGUE

Summer league starts in May. Each team consists of 3 x singles players, and 2 x doubles pairs - 7 players in total. You are nominated as either a singles or doubles player in order of merit/strength, and generally stay in that position for each match unless substitutes are needed, which may alter the order & position of the players.

Matches are usually played on weekday evenings.

MIXED LEAGUE

Mixed league starts in July each year. Each team is made up of 3 x mixed doubles pairs, with the strongest pair playing at position 1 and so on. Subs may be used if needed.

Matches are usually played on a Friday evening.

SENIOR LEAGUES

Senior league starts in September each year. Each team is made up of 3 x doubles pairs, with the strongest pair playing at position 1 and so on. Subs may be used if needed. There are various age categories for men's and women's senior league - from O35, O45, O55 to up to O65 depending on the league.

Matches are usually played on Sundays, with the O60s women and O65 men playing on a midweek morning.

FLOODLIGHT LEAGUE

Floodlight league starts in late September each year and is played under lights on a weekday evening - men play on Monday and ladies play on Tuesday.

Floodlight league is unusual in that each team consists of 2 x singles players and 1 x doubles pair, however the matches are decided by a lucky dip on the night ... you won't know if you are playing singles or doubles until you arrive for the match.

GET INVOLVED!

If you are interested in league, talk to the Mens or Ladies captains.

A good start is to participate in the internal LCC club box leagues throughout the year which will give you good practice against other players and help you determine your playing level.

While we always try and include interested players, however sometimes there are more players than places available on a team. This means some players will get more matches than others, particularly stronger players, and those readily available for the match schedule. If a team player is not available for a fixture, then a substitute player would be selected from a panel of interested subs.

League is a competition - the aim is to progress through the group stages to playoffs and points are awarded for each match win, so structuring a team to maximise its strength will be a consideration when selecting players each week. If a team performs well and gets through the playoffs to the finals they are generally promoted up a division for the next year. Conversely, if a team does not perform well in their division they run the risk of being demoted to a lower class for the next year.

Talk to our Mens’ and Ladies’ Captains if you’re interested in taking part.
